Vincent is an AI legal assistant from vLex (part of Clio) that works inside Clio Operate. Vincent reads what is recorded on a matter, researches the law and drafts work for you. With your approval, Vincent also updates the matter, and your firm can build Vincent into workflows to automate parts of a process.

What Vincent can do

Vincent brings its own legal research and analysis into Clio Operate, and adds the knowledge that your firm already records on each matter.

• Research the law. Vincent researches case law, legislation and secondary sources in the vLex legal library, and cites the authorities that it relies on.
• Work with documents. Vincent reads, summarises and compares documents from the matter, and suggests what it can do with the documents that you attach.
• Use the whole matter. Vincent reads the matter's details, participants, key dates, tasks, comments, chronology, wiki, custom fields, time entries and documents. You do not need to attach anything to ask about a matter.
• Update the matter. Vincent can create and update tasks, key dates and time entries, add participants, and update the matter description, custom fields and wiki. Vincent asks you to approve each change first.
• Follow your firm's approach. Skills are saved instructions, sometimes called playbooks, that capture how your firm handles a piece of work. Everyone who runs a skill gets the same approach and the same kind of output.
• Run inside workflows. A workflow can start a Vincent conversation at a set point in a process and save Vincent's answer to the matter. In Decision mode, Vincent chooses which branch of the workflow runs next.
• Record your time. If you turn on automatic time tracking, Vincent records the time that you spend in a conversation. Vincent then creates a draft time entry for you to review.

For example, a fee-earner who takes over a matter can ask Vincent for an overview, the next steps and any risks. Vincent reads the matter's records and documents, and answers in one place. The fee-earner can then ask Vincent to create the tasks for those next steps.

Where Vincent appears

Your administrator decides who can use Vincent and on which types of matter. Where Vincent is available to you, it appears in these places:

• On a matter. Select Vincent in the matter's navigation menu to open the Vincent page.
• From documents. Select one or more files in the matter's documents, or open a document preview, then select Analyse with Vincent.
• On other work items. Some work items, such as instructions, open in a blade. Your firm can add a row to the blade that opens Vincent.
• Outside a matter. Your firm can add Vincent to a launchpad or menu for general legal research.
• In workflows. Vincent runs in the background as a step in a workflow that your firm has designed.

How you stay in control

You remain responsible for any work that you base on Vincent's output. Vincent is built to help you check it.

• Vincent asks for your approval before it changes anything on the matter.
• Vincent cites its sources, and it can show the records and documents that it used.
• Your Vincent conversations stay on the matter. Anyone with access to the matter can see them, but they cannot change them.
• In a workflow, the workflow designer decides which changes Vincent can make without asking. For any other change, the workflow pauses until a person approves it.
