Hiding bounding boxes in the Word Add-in

When the Word Add-in inserts a tag into a document template, it is placed inside a Microsoft Word content control. By default, this control displays a visible frame around the tag. This frame can be distracting when reviewing a generated document or sending it to an external party.

The Word Add-in includes a Hide Bounding Boxes toggle in Settings. Enabling it removes the visible frame from all tags inserted after the setting is applied. The tag remains a fully functional content control and can still be refreshed with data from Clio Operate.

The setting does not apply retrospectively. Tags already in the document when the setting is enabled will still display their frames. To apply the setting to an existing document, you need to re-tag it.

Before you start

You need the Admin – Document Assembly permission to access Template Author functionality in the Word Add-in.

Hiding frames on new tags

  1. Open the Word Add-in and navigate to Settings.
  2. Enable the Hide Bounding Boxes toggle.

All tags you insert from this point forward will not display a frame. Existing tags in the document are not affected.

Hiding frames on existing tags

To remove the frame from a tag already in the document:

  1. Select the content control in the Word document.
  2. Navigate to the Developer tab in Word.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Set the Show as field to None.
  5. Select OK.

For the Windows version of Word, if the Developer tab is not visible, navigate to File > Options > Customise Ribbon and enable the Developer checkbox.

The Properties feature within the Developer tab is currently unavailable in the Word for macOS. For more information, see Why does my macbook's desktop Word not have "content controls" under the Developer tab in Word? - Microsoft Q&A.

Removing all frames from a generated document

If you have the Word Add-in enabled as an end user, you can use Finalise Document to remove all content control frames from the output document at once.

Important: Finalising a document removes all content controls. Once finalised, the document can no longer be refreshed with updated data from Clio Operate. Only finalise a document when you are certain no further refresh is needed.
