Units of measure describe what a finance item is counted in, such as hour, day, kg or litre. Rate cards and invoice transaction item types all draw their units from this list. Clio Operate provides a standard set, and you can add your own.
How units of measure are organised
Units of measure sit in a two-level list.
- Unit of measure types are the categories, for example Time or Weight.
- Units of measure are the individual units. Each unit belongs to one type.
Each type can have a default unit. For example, the Quantity type defaults to Each.
Standard types and units
Clio Operate provides five standard types. These are system types, so you cannot rename, disable or delete them. You can add your own types.
| Type | Standard units |
|---|---|
| Quantity | Each, %, Unit |
| Weight | kg, gm |
| Time | Second, Minute, Hour, Day, Week, Month, Year |
| Length | m |
| Volume | L |
Where units of measure are used
-
Rate cards. A rate card has an Allowable Units of Measure setting, and each rate card item has a UOM.
- Hourly (charge-out rate) cards are fixed to Hour, and the field is locked.
- All other rate cards only offer units from the Quantity type. A custom unit in any other type is not available on a rate card.
- If you leave Allowable Units of Measure blank, every Quantity unit is allowed.
- Invoice transaction item types. Quantity UOM Type and Quantity UOM control which units are available on invoice and payment transaction lines. The Create Invoice and Create Payment Request workflow nodes use the same list.
- Time internal costs. The unit of measure picker draws on the units in the Time type.
The Unit of Measure setting in Time Recording, with the options Hours and Units (6 Minutes), is not part of this list. It has its own fixed options in the Time Recording settings.

| Name | The name of the type. |

Unit fields
| Type | The unit of measure type the unit belongs to. You cannot change it once saved. |

| Name | A longer description of the unit. You can change it at any time. |
| Enabled | Whether the unit is available. A disabled unit is no longer displayed in pickers, and records that already use it keep it. You can change it at any time. |
Units of measure
Units of measure can also be managed in Admin > Finance > Units of Measure. This lists every unit across all types. You cannot create/edit types here.
Add a unit
- Select New.
- Complete the fields, then save.
Edit a unit
- Open the menu on the unit's row and select Edit.
- Update Name or Enabled, then save.
Disable and delete
Disable a unit rather than delete it where you can. Disabling removes it from pickers without affecting records that already use it.
- Deleting a unit. You can only delete a unit if no goods and services item uses it and it is not the default for any type. Otherwise, Delete is absent from the row menu.
- Deleting a type. You can only delete a custom type, and only if none of its units are used by a goods and services item. Deleting a type also deletes all its units.
