Understanding Phase Plans

Watch this short video to find out how phase plans work.

Key Concepts

What Is a Phase Plan?

A phase plan is a visual representation of the different states a work type can inhabit and the relationships between those states. In ShareDo, all work types have a phase plan.

Here is an example of a typical ShareDo phase plan. The blue blocks represent phases, and the lines between them show the transitions between phases.

What is a Phase?

A phase is the state a work type is in at any given moment. You create phase plans by linking phases to show all the paths the work type can take.  Use phases to control work type behaviour in a given phase. You can set rules for a specific phase to control the behaviour.

What is a Phase Transition?

A phase transition is the movement of a work type from one phase to another, represented in our example by the arrows. A transition is often used to trigger a workflow. For example, you might trigger a task for a participant to review the case when the work type transitions to the Abandoned state. You can name transitions so that they are clear to the user when they are entering a transition.

What is a Phase Guard?

A transition is often protected by a phase guard, which is a set of conditions that must be completed before you can move into your target phase.

What is a Phase Feature?

A phase feature is a feature enabled on a specific phase in the model. For example, you could choose to enable an Anti-Money Laundering matter configuration at the Negotiation phase, but not at the Litigation phase of a work type. One common use case for phase features is to filter list views (burger menu > Manage this list view).

Inheritance

It is important to understand the concept of inheritance with regard to phase plans. When you create a derived work type, your work type inherits the phase plan from its parent work type. If you need to make changes to your new plan (but not the parent), copy the plan (Copy a Phase Plan). If you want to change the phase plan of the parent and child, you can edit the plan (Edit an Inherited Phase Plan).

It is important to be aware when editing an inherited phase plan that you are also changing the phase plan of any other children of the parent work type.
